Facilitation skills

Facilitation skills enables a business partner to act as a catalyst in business discussions, meetings and performance reviews etc. He/she assists the group to achieve the best possible result by maximizing the decision-making and creative processes within the group. To this end he/she uses the tools and techniques of facilitation but also makes use of effective modes of group communication.

The facilitation skills workshop within the business partnering programme includes the following elements:

designing a facilitated event
Working with a model for facilitation business partners learn to define objectives for an event and design an appropriate process to support their achievement. This also includes developing an understanding of the role that feelings play in the group process and how to accommodate them in their design.

group development and behaviours
Understanding the stages of group development and the implications for a facilitator. Learning to work with task and maintenance behaviours to improve a group's effectiveness.

intervening in a group process
Learning how to monitor the group's progress at a task and feelings level and how to intervene at both levels. Learning to live with not having all the answers to the group's problems and how to conduct a diagnosis of progress.

contracting with client managers
Using the consulting skills to establish a relationship with the client manager that allows responsibility for outcomes to be shared.

facilitation tools & structures
Learning to work with a tool kit of structures and integrate them into sound event design. This includes structures for the task and feelings processes. At the task level delegates work with flowcharting, brainstorming, list reduction, decision tools, and the Harvard Team Planning technique.

As facilitators of change it is essential that business partners develop effective facilitation skills.
